Prep football two-a-days: Hillcrest
It takes a lot to discourage Christian Child.
As a sophomore for Hillcrest, he was told that the second half of the season was canceled due to lack of players, but that didn't stop him from going to practice and standing on the sidelines.
Learning behind Hillcrest linebackers Jake Fife and Cade Madson last year, Child hit the gym to get stronger and faster.
Today Child is on a mission for Hillcrest and ready to fill their shoes. He's committed to turning around the Hillcrest program and getting the Huskies into the postseason for the first time since 2002.
"He's a constant for this program," Hillcrest coach Casey Miller said. "He's seen the bad times and wants to see the good times. He's committed to turn it around for us."
Child is indicative of the spirit of the Huskie football program. With 18 returners, Miller is excited about Hillcrest moving from Class 4A to 5A and thinks his experienced players will improve upon last season's 3-7 record.
"It's going to be interesting, but we got experience on our side," Miller said. "We're working hard on eliminating weakness and focused on success."
Quarterback Tanner Thompson will run the shotgun spread. Miller said that Thompson is the Huskies' best offensive weapon and likes his ability to make the smart pass or run downfield.
"Tanner fits the spread offense really well," Miller said. "With the ball in his hands, he's able to make the throw or get around the corner."
ASSIGNMENT • Region 2
