Santa Clara, Calif. • The San Francisco 49ers have signed defensive end Justin Smith to a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2015 season.

General manager Trent Baalke said in a statement Wednesday that "this contract allows Justin to finish his career as a 49er!"

The 33-year-old Smith was sidelined the final 2 ½ games of the regular season, ending his streak of 185 consecutive starts. He returned in the playoffs to help the 49ers reach the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Baltimore Ravens.

Smith has made the Pro Bowl four straight seasons. Since joining San Francisco in 2008, he has 536 tackles, 32 sacks, seven forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and one interception.
