Matt Shoemaker struck out nine batters over five innings and combined with three relievers to throw a three-hit shutout on Tuesday night, leading Salt Lake past Sacramento 10-0.

The game was played in front of a crowd of 15,185, the largest at Spring Mobile Ballpark this season.

Andrew Romine got the offense started early for Salt Lake when he led off the bottom of the first inning with an opposite-field home run down the left-field line, just his second homer of the season.

Chris Nelson, playing his second game with the Bees following major league stints this season with the Colorado Rockies, the New York Yankees and the Angels, hit solo home runs in the third and eighth innings.

On Monday night in Fresno, Matt Long was the hero when he hit a game-tying grand slam in the ninth inning to send the game to extra innings. On Tuesday, Long hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and added an RBI double in the sixth.

"When Matt first got here this year he was swinging the bat really well," said Bees manager Keith Johnson. "Then he went through a little lull, but now he's starting to come out of that. The at-bats had been getting better and better, and then obviously the last two nights you can't say enough about his production."

While the Salt Lake offense was ticking, it was Shoemaker who kept Sacramento in check early. The right-hander allowed just one hit and walked three to go along with his nine strikeouts.

Shoemaker's counterpart for the River Cats, Bruce Billings, lasted just 31⁄3 innings after giving up five runs.

Salt Lake's big inning came in the sixth, when Roberto Lopez led off with a single and moved to third base on a single by John Hester. Long followed with his RBI double that scored Lopez and moved Hester from first to third. Romine then hit a single to left field that scored Hester, and a throwing error on the play by Sacramento left-fielder Shane Peterson allowed Long to score from second base while Romine advanced all the way to third.

Romine came home later in the inning on an RBI groundout by Efren Navarro to make it 9-0. —
