Auto racing: Texan Gercham captures Great Salt Lake 75

West Valley City • Chris Gercham of Spring Branch, Texas, won the inaugural Lucas Oil Modifieds Series main event Saturday night at Rocky Mountain Raceways.

Gercham took the lead on the first lap and didn't relinquish during it during the BILSTEIN Great Salt Lake 75. He survived seven restarts and every challenge he faced from the 25 other drivers in the field.

Season points leader Jim Mardis finished second while Chase Catania, Doug Hamm and Nik Romano rounded out the top five. Among local drivers, Michael Hardy finished sixth and Lynn Hale placed eighth. Mark Ith Jr. was running in the top five until he lost an engine on the 44th lap.
