The Colorado Rockies placed Troy Tulowitzki on the disabled list on Friday, and the star shortstop could miss up to six weeks because of a broken rib.

Team spokesman Nick Piburn said an MRI taken Thursday night revealed a right rib fracture. Tulowitzki was injured earlier in the day while diving for a ball in the eighth inning of a 5-4 loss to the Washington Nationals.

"I'm not going to sugarcoat it. It's a big loss for us," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said Friday before Colorado hosted the Philadelphia Phillies.

"It's also an opportunity for our team to step up and do what I think we've done well all season and that's respond to adversity," he added.

Tulowitzki told the Denver Post in a text that he was in a lot of pain and was upset after working so hard to come back from an injury-plagued 2012 season.

Cubs' Stewart suspended for tweets

Chicago Cubs third baseman Ian Stewart is serving a 10-game suspension without pay for violating the loyalty cause in his contract. The suspension, which came after he ranted on Twitter on Monday about his status within the organization, began Wednesday.

Stewart was answering questions from fans online late Monday and was asked whether he would return to the Cubs soon. He responded "probably never" before following up with: "I said that be because the cubs are done With me....there [sic] going to let me Rott [sic] in AAA all season and then non tender me after."

Jeter resumes drills

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter resumed hitting and fielding drills Friday for the first time since mid-April, a day after receiving medical clearance to increase his rehabilitation program for a broken left ankle. "They gave the green light, so that's encouraging," Jeter said. "I'm looking forward to it."
