COLLEGE SOFTBALL • National player of the year Keilani Ricketts homered and drove in four runs, Michelle Gascoigne pitched a three-hit shutout and top-seeded Oklahoma won the NCAA softball championship by beating Tennessee 4-0 on Tuesday night in Oklahoma City in Game 2 of the Women's College World Series finals. Ricketts drove a 2-1 pitch from Ivy Renfroe (22-5) halfway up the right-field bleachers for a three-run home run in the third inning and tacked on an RBI groundout in the seventh.

Ex-Auburn point guard arrested

COLLEGE basketball • Former Auburn point guard Varez Ward has been arrested for allegedly trying to fix games and offering money to teammates to help during the 2011-12 season. U.S. Attorney George Beck Jr. said that Ward was arrested Monday in Montgomery, Ala., on counts of bribery relating to a sports contest and conspiracy for allegedly trying to fix the point spread for the Tigers' game against Arkansas on Jan. 25, 2012. Ward came off the bench in the 56-53 loss to Arkansas but crumpled to the floor after playing only 19 seconds with an apparent leg injury.

Notre Dame recruit switches to UCLA

COLLEGE FOOTBALL • Notre Dame said Tuesday it will not release a standout high school recruit from his letter of intent before he enrolls at UCLA later this month, meaning he can't play football for the Bruins this fall and will lose a season of eligibility. Eddie Vanderdoes will have only three years of eligibility remaining because Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly did not release the 6-3, 285-pound defensive lineman from the letter he signed earlier this year.

Japan qualifiesfor World Cup

SOCCER • Japan became the first team to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, tying Australia 1-1 Tuesday night on Keisuke Honda's penalty kick in the first minute of second-half stoppage time in Saitama, Japan.
