NFL • David "Deacon" Jones, a Hall of Fame defensive end credited with terming the word "sack" for how he knocked down quarterbacks, has died. He was 74. The Washington Redskins said Monday night that Jones died of natural causes at his home in Southern California.
Jones was the leader of the Los Angeles Rams' Fearsome Foursome unit from 1961-71 and then played for San Diego for two seasons before finishing his career with the Redskins in 1974. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980 and made the league's 75th anniversary all-time squad.
• Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly says he has been diagnosed with cancer in his upper jaw bone and will have surgery on June 7. Kelly, 53, will have part of the upper jaw removed.
Texas A&M lands top quarterback
college football • Top-rated quarterback recruit Kyle Allen has committed to Texas A&M. The 6-foot-3 quarterback from Scottsdale Desert Mountain was rated as the nation's top pro-style quarterback in the 2014 class by Rivals and Scout. He announced Monday that he had chosen to play at Texas A&M after considering Notre Dame, Ohio State, UCLA and Oklahoma State. Allen threw for over 3,100 yards and 36 TDs during his junior season and is expected to be the heir to Johnny Manziel when last year's Heisman Trophy winner leaves College Station.
Oklahoma wins Game 1 of finals
college softball • Lauren Chamberlain hit a two-run home run down the left-field line in the bottom of the 12th inning, lifting top-seeded Oklahoma to a 5-3 win against Tennessee in Game 1 of the Women's College World Series finals in Oklahoma City. Chamberlain followed Brianna Turang's leadoff double by smashing a high drive over the foul pole for her 30th homer of the season. Game 2 of the best-of-three series is Tuesday night.
