State colleges: Pole vaulter Victor Weirech joins BYU's contingent for nationals
BYU pole vaulter Victor Weirich tied for first place Saturday in the NCAA West Preliminary in Austin, Texas, earning a spot in next month's national championships.
Weirich had a mark of 17 feet, 8.5 inches to qualify for the nationals, which will be held June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
Weirich will be joined by BYU's Ryan Waite (800 meters), Daniel Carney (steeplechase), Curtis Carr (steeplechase), Jared Ward (10,000 meters) and Tylor Thatcher (10,000 meters) at the NCAA Championships.
Weber State's John Coyle finished 11th overall in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase to qualify for nationals, posting a career-best time of 8 minutes, 41.64 seconds to earn the spot.
Utah State's 4x100 team, made up of Will Henry, Jacob Bautista Jr., Nic Bowens and Cole Lambourne, ran a season-best time of 40.20 to finish 14th overall Saturday, just shy of a national qualifying position.
Southern Utah's Ryan Barrus finished 18th in the men's 5K in 14:52.39, failing to advance.
Utah's Amanda Mergaert qualified for a spot in the women's 1,500 meters at the NCAA championships for the third straight year. Mergaert placed fourth in her heat and seventh overall with a time of 4:15.19.
"I think this was the most nervous I've been before a race," Mergaert said. "It was a difficult race but I just tried to remain calm and stay focused. It was great having so much support from my teammates that were here and I can't wait for Eugene. It's one of those places where I just love to compete."
Weber State's Amber Henry advanced in the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase, winning her heat and finishing second overall with a time of 9:57.75.
• Westminster College's Oliver Lange set a school record while running to a sixth-place finish in the marathon at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in Marion, Ind. Lange finished in 2 hours, 31 minutes, 1 second. Nathan Martin from Spring Arbor (Mich.) won the race by setting an NAIA National Championships record time of 2:19:18.
Oregon 6, Utah 2 • The Utes committed five errors and trailed 6-0 before scoring two late runs in their Pac-12 loss at Spring Mobile Ballpark.
Trey Nielsen went 2 for 5 for Utah (20-31, 6-23), Cory Hunt had an RBI single in the seventh inning, and Bret Helton hit a run-scoring double in the eighth.
Utah starter Dalton Carroll (4-8) took the loss, giving up five runs (one earned) on six hits over five innings.
