Sports briefs: Serena Williams, Sharapova will meet in Madrid Open final

Tennis • Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova will play for the No. 1 ranking and the Madrid Open title after winning semifinals in straight sets Saturday.

The top-ranked Williams will have a chance to win her 50th title after beating Sara Errani of Italy 7-5, 6-2. No. 2 Sharapova got her 500th win at all levels after defeating Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 6-3.

On the men's side, Rafael Nadal reached his seventh consecutive final since returning from a knee injury, brushing aside wild-card entry Pablo Andujar 6-0, 6-4.

The Spaniard will play Stanislas Wawrinka, after the 15th-ranked Swiss recovered late to defeat Tomas Berdych 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Ervin wins 50-meter freestyleat Arena Grand Prix

Swimming • Two-time Olympian Anthony Ervin has won the 50-meter freestyle at the Arena Grand Prix in Charlotte, N.C.

Ervin took the one-lap dash with a blistering in-season time of 22.01 seconds Saturday night, beating a field that included fellow Olympians Cullen Jones, Tyler McGill, Ricky Berens and Britain's Adam Brown.

U.S. tops France in world hockey

Hockey • The United States beat France 4-2 Saturday for its fourth win at the ice hockey world championships in Helsinki.

Finland overtook the group lead from the Americans with a 7-2 win over Austria, but has a game more played, meaning the U.S. can clinch the top seed for the quarterfinals if it wins its last two round-robin matches.
