Indianapolis • Athletic expenses are rising at a faster pace than revenue is being generated at most Division I schools.
The NCAA's 2012 Revenue and Expenses Report, released this week, showed Football Bowl Subdivision schools were spending 10.8 percent more on athletics than they did the previous school year. Schools in the Football Championship Subdivision increased their budgets by 6.8 percent and non-football playing Division I schools saw an increase of 8.8 percent.
Revenue coming from outside sources, however, only increased by 4.6 percent at FBS schools and decreased by 1.7 percent at the non-football playing schools. FCS schools saw revenue increase by 9 percent.
Twenty-three schools reported turning a profit in athletics, the same as 2011.
