State colleges: Arizona State baseball team beats Utah
The Arizona State baseball team took a three-run lead in the first inning and went on to beat Utah 5-1 in a Pac-12 game Saturday at Spring Mobile Ballpark.
The Sun Devils (27-12-1, 10-7) ripped four hits, including three doubles, in the first inning off Utah starter Dalton Carroll (3-5), jumping to a 3-0 advantage.
Konnor Armijo went 2 for 4 and drove in the only run for Utah (16-22, 5-15) with a second-inning single.
BYU 9, Gonzaga 6 • In Spokane, Wash., Jaycob Brugman hit two home runs, Brock Whitney added a three-run shot, and the Cougars (21-17, 8-7) hammered the No. 22-ranked Bulldogs (28-14-1, 15-6) after losing the first two games of the West Coast Conference series.
Pepperdine 4, BYU 3 • In San Diego, the Waves beat the Cougars for the West Coast Conference championship, getting the edge in doubles while the teams split the singles matches 3-3. BYU's Patrick Kawka beat Sebastian Fanselow 7-6 (5), 7-6 (1) in the No. 1 singles match.
In Provo, Zac Blair shot a final-round 68 at Riverside Country Club to win the Cougar Classic and lead BYU to its second straight team title in the event. Blair finished at 14-under 202, and teammate Joe Parkinson finished in a tie for second, one stroke back. The Cougars (-32) dominated the field, beating out second-place Air Force by 17 strokes and third-place Saint Mary's by 25 strokes.
Stanford 12, Utah 0 (5) • The Utes (23-26-1, 6-14 Pac-12) managed just two hits, including Chalese Fankhauser's eighth double of the season, in the five-inning loss to the host Cardinal (31-16, 8-9).
Utah Valley 9-3, Santa Clara 1-1 • In Orem, Amanda Robinson drove in five runs, and pitchers Tiffany Mills and Josi Summers combined to allow just two runs on six hits as the Wolverines swept the doubleheader.
UT Arlington 1, Utah State 0 • The Mavericks completed a sweep of the Aggies with their third straight 1-0, walk-off victory, winning on Nina Villanueva's seventh-inning RBI double.
