Boxing • Five Utahns will be a part of the Rocky Mountain Region team that competes next month at the National Golden Gloves boxing tournament in Salt Lake City.
With the regional finals contested Saturday night at the Sorenson Multicutural Center, Utah's Alan Leyba advanced at 123 pounds, Francisco Lopez advanced at 132 pounds, Larry Gomez advanced at 152 pounds, Danny Galloway got in at 165 pounds, and Jesse West got in at heavyweight.
Wyoming's Abram Martinez is the 141-pound regional champion, while Andrew Scott, unopposed at 201 pounds, will also represent the Rocky Mountain Region.
In the bout of the night, Utah's Gomez won by TKO over Idaho's Derik Jensen.
About 300 of the best amateur boxers in the country will converge on Salt Lake City May 13-18 for the nationals at the Salt Palace Convention Center.
McQuaid's bid to stay as head of cycling body is in doubt
Cycling • Pat McQuaid's nomination by Cycling Ireland to stand for a third term as head of the sport's world governing body is to be re-considered.
The UCI president has been under pressure since details emerged of systematic doping by Lance Armstrong to win seven Tour de France titles. But McQuaid received the nomination after pledging to overhaul the UCI.
However, Cycling Ireland says its board would hold an emergency general meeting at a date to be determined "to consider matters which have arisen following the decision taken at its board meeting on April 12th to nominate Mr. Pat McQuaid."
