NFL • The Packers locked up star linebacker Clay Matthews with a long-term extension Wednesday as the team took care of one of its top two stars in need of new deals. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is also in negotiations for an extension.
Matthews posted a picture of himself on Twitter signing the deal, saying, "Trivial amongst the recent tragic news, but happy to continue my career in Green Bay!" The Packers did not announce terms of the extension, reported to be for five years, but the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said the deal is worth $66 million. That would put Matthews on par with Dallas outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware, whose contract also averages $13 million per year.
Rutgers targeting Lakers assistant
College basketball • Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Eddie Jordan is returning to New Jersey for what might be a final round of talks with Rutgers about taking over its beleaguered basketball program.
A person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press that Jordan was going to travel from Los Angeles on Wednesday, and planned to meet with Rutgers officials Thursday in an attempt to reach an agreement on a contract to replace the fired Mike Rice.
Forbes: Real Madrid most valuable club
Soccer • Real Madrid passed Manchester United as the most valuable soccer team in Forbes' annual estimates.
Forbes valued Real Madrid at $3.3 billion in rankings released Wednesday, up from last year's estimate of $1.88 billion.
Manchester United, which had been No. 1 since Forbes started the list in 1994, was second at $3.17 billion, a 42 percent increase. Barcelona was third at $2.6 billion.
