First baseman Trey Nielsen hit two solo home runs as the Utah baseball team beat Washington State 2-1 on Saturday at Spring Mobile Ballpark.

Freshman starter Dalton Carroll (3-2) earned the win, allowing one run on six hits in 61⁄3 innings. Nick Green came on in relief for the second day in a row and pitched two innings of shutout ball, striking out two batters. Luke West retired the final two Cougars to earn his first save.

Batting third in the lineup for Utah (14-13, 4-7 Pac-12) Nielsen hit homers in the fourth and sixth innings.

"I've been seeing it well so far in this series," Nielsen said. "I was swinging late the first time I came up and then he left me a hanger and I made the adjustment. Luckily, it paid off and we got ourselves the 'W' here today."

Washington State fell to 16-13 and 3-5.

Utah will go for a sweep in the three-game series at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Spring Mobile.

BYU 5, Santa Clara 2 • In Santa Clara, Calif., Bret Lopez hit a solo homer and a run-scoring double as the Cougars (17-14, 5-4 West Coast Conference) completed a three-game series sweep.

BYU reliever Derek Speigner (3-0) was perfect over 41⁄3 innings to earn the win. Starter Keaton Cenatiempo held Santa Clara to two runs on three hits over 42⁄3 innings.

Softball

Utah 4-7, UCLA 6-4 • Kate Dickman hit a run-scoring triple and a home run as the host Utes won the second game of the Pac-12 doubleheader. Dickman also had a triple and a homer in the opener, but the Utes (15-20-1, 2-9) fell short.

Utah Valley 3-2, BYU 2-3 • In Orem, Utah Valley's Jamie North hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Wolverines (24-14, 7-5 PCSC) won the opener. BYU (16-20, 6-2 PCSC) won the second game in 10 innings, scoring a run off a hard grounder by Katie Manuma.

Utah State 1-4, UT San Antonio 0-5 • Utah State's Mandy Harmon threw a shutout in the opener as the Aggies (8-29, 2-7) split the doubleheader to win their first series since April 2011, against Nevada.

Southern Utah 6, Sacramento State 5 (8) • In Cedar City, Kelsey Bryant drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Idaho State 9, Weber State 3 • In Pocatello, Idaho, Weber State's Kortney Jensen and Alyson Kulp hit RBI doubles, but the Wildcats (6-29, 2-7 Big Sky) lost the series finale.

Men's tennis

BYU 4, Boise State 3 • BYU's Patrick Kawka beat Andy Bettles 7-5, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match, and the Cougars snapped the Broncos' 28-match home win streak.

USC 5, Utah 2 • In Los Angeles, Utah's Cedric Willems beat USC's Michael Grant 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 5 singles match, and Utah's Ben Tasevac beat Max de Vroome 6-3, 7-6 (4) at No. 6 singles for the Utes' points in the loss.

Track and field

In Tempe, Ariz., BYU's Nicole Nielsen (17 minutes, 14.35 seconds) finished fourth in the women's 5,000 meters at the Sun Angel Classic.
