RSL: One forward returns, two step back

Findley could miss up to four weeks after injury against Seattle.

After missing Saturday’s game with a knee injury, leading goal scorer Alvaro Saborio trained fully with the team Tuesday.

Saborio walked off the field with ice on his knee, which was kicked during a game last week between Costa Rica and Jamaica, but should be available for Saturday’s match against the Colorado Rapids.

Absent from Tuesday’s practice, however, were Saborio’s fellow forwards Robbie Findley and Joao Plata.

Plata injured his hamstring late in Saturday’s win over Seattle.

"If we had a sub we would have used it," coach Jason Kreis said. "But he had to gut it out for us. He could be available this week, or next weekend."

Findley, who strained his left adductor Saturday while scoring his first goal of the season could miss two to four weeks, Kreis said.

Wingert returns

Defender Chris Wingert saw his first action of the season Monday night at Rio Tinto Stadium, coming on as a second-half substitute in RSL’s 1-0 exhibition win over BYU.

"It felt great to be out there," said Wingert, who broke a bone in his foot while training during the offseason. "I didn’t feel too sharp; a little slow and sluggish, but maybe that’s to be expected.

"Sometimes your mind thinks you can do things and your body can’t keep up. But my foot feels good, and I just need to keep pushing forward and hopefully start to get a little sharper in the next week or two."

Wingert said he hopes to see more minutes during Saturday night’s reserve match in Colorado, and then focus on winning back his spot in the starting lineup.

"The guys are playing great and nobody owes me anything," he said. "I don’t deserve to be on the field unless I’m the best guy for the job."

Learning curve

Kreis’ system, with a heavy focus on winning balls and keeping possession, can be challenging for new players — both rookies and veterans — to pick up.

After Monday’s reserve match, defender Lovel Palmer, who has played for the Portland Timbers, the Houston Dynamo and the Jamaican national team, said Kreis’ system is "different from what I’ve ever played."

"It’s a whole different system here," the 28-year-old said. "I feel as if I’m learning soccer all over again, the correct way."
