Pitcher Kyle Lohse and the Milwaukee Brewers have reached agreement on a three-year contract worth $33 million, a person familiar with the agreement said on Monday.

The 34-year-old Lohse joined the Brewers exactly a week before they're set to open the season at home against Colorado.

Lohse enjoyed his best season in the majors last year, going 16-3 with a 2.86 ERA and helping the St. Louis Cardinals earn an NL wild-card spot. He is 118-109 lifetime with a 4.45 ERA in 12 seasons with Minnesota, Cincinnati, Philadelphia and St. Louis.

Around the horn

Indians • Scott Kazmir, who hasn't pitched in the majors in almost two years, has won a spot in Cleveland's rotation. The left-hander was chosen as the Indians' No. 5 starter on Monday by manager Terry Francona as the club made several roster moves. Kazmir's comeback took him to the independent Atlantic League last season. A two-time All-Star with Tampa Bay, he outpitched a group that included Daisuke Matsuzaka in camp to make the starting staff. Kazmir went 9-15 with the Los Angeles Angels in 2010. He made one start in 2011 before he was placed on the disabled list and released two months later.

Padres • Manager Bud Black announced that right-hander Edinson Volquez will start on opening day for San Diego against the New York Mets. Volquez started each round of the World Baseball Classic this month for the champion Dominican Republic. He was 11-11 with a 4.14 ERA last year for the Padres.

Tigers • Virgil "Fire" Trucks, who threw two no-hitters for Detroit in an otherwise dreadful 1952 season and was the last visiting pitcher to toss a complete-game no-hitter at Yankee Stadium, died Saturday in Alabama. He was 95.
