Sports briefs: U.S. soccer team cuts captain Carlos Bocanegra

Soccer • The United States heads into World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica and Mexico with an inexperienced defense after dropping captain Carlos Bocanegra and learning eight players are injured or ill.

Already without goalkeeper Tim Howard, the shaky U.S. back line got even weaker Monday when coach Jurgen Klinsmann said Timmy Chandler, Fabian Johnson and Danny Williams will miss the matches.

The 33-year-old Bocanegra, the American captain since 2007, has lost his starting job with Racing Santander, a Spanish second-division team on its fourth coach of the season.

"He's simply not playing. He's not getting any minutes ... so he has no flow. He has no rhythm, and he understands that situation," Klinsmann said.

Real Salt Lake goalie Nick Rimando, midfielder Kyle Beckerman and defender Tony Beltran have been called up to the U.S. national team. The call-ups were announced Monday. RSL forward Alvaro Saborio will play for Costa Rica in Friday's match in Commerce City, Colo.

The U.S. is at Mexico on March 26.

KJZZ to televise fives Bees games

Baseball • KJZZ will televise five Salt Lake Bees home games in 2013, including the home opener April 4 against the Tucson Padres at Spring Mobile Ballpark.

Steve Klauke, entering his 20th season of broadcasting Bees games, will be joined by former Major League player and BYU baseball coach Vance Law on May 16, June 1, July 5 and Aug. 1.

When Klauke moves to TV, Tony Parks will take over the radio broadcast on 1280 AM.
