Utah State basketball: Three receive all-WAC honors for Aggie women

Utah State's Devyn Christensen, Jenna Johnson and Jennifer Schlott were all named to the all-WAC basketball teams Monday after leading the Aggies to a second-place finish during the conference season.

Christensen earned her second-straight first team honor after leading the team in scoring with 19.8 points per game, good for No. 22 in the NCAA. She also led the WAC in free throw percentage, shooting 92.3 percent which is the third-best mark in the nation.

Schlott's spot on the second team was her first all-WAC honor, as the junior averaged 16.0 points and 4.9 assists per game for Utah State. Johnson earned third team honors after upping her scoring average to 15.7 points per game, and adding 3.1 steals per game to finish on the all-defensive team as well.

It marked the first time Utah State has ever had three Aggies on the women's basketball all-WAC teams. The program had a rough non-conference start at 3-8, but turned it around to a 17-12 regular season record and finishing behind Seattle in the WAC standings.

Seattle's Kacie Sowell, a 6-foot-2 post, was named WAC player of the year - the honor Christensen was tabbed for in the preseason. The Redhawks also boasted coach of the year Joan Bonvicini and defensive player of the year Sylvia Shepard.

New Mexico State's Stefanie Gilbreath was named the conference newcomer of the year.

Joining Christensen on the first team was Sowell, Texas State's Diamond Ford, San Jose State's Ta'Rea Cunnigan and Idaho's Alyssa Charlston.

Utah State begins WAC tournament play at 3:30 p.m. MT on Wednesday, March 13 at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The Aggies play the first-round winner of UT-Arlington and Denver.
