Middlebury, Vt. • Ana Kobal placed fifth in slalom during the third day of the NCAA Championships, but the Utes dropped from third to fourth with one day remaining.

Reigning national champion Vermont leads with 564 points, followed by Colorado (510), Denver (484) and Utah (481).

The championships conclude Saturday with the final Nordic events — 15K/20K freestyle races — at 8 a.m.

Baseball

BYU 3, UC Irvine 1 • Bret Lopez sparked a three-run fifth inning with a double to deep right field to help the Cougars beat the No. 21-ranked Anteaters in Provo.

BYU (9-6) also defeated Irvine (11-4) on Thursday. The teams play again at noon Saturday.

Adam Miller allowed six hits and one run in six innings, and Brock Whitney went 2-for-3 with a run for BYU, which has won seven of its past eight games.

Utah 3, Saint Mary's 1 • Mitch Watrous tied a school record with 12 strikeouts and Kody Davis went 2-for-4 with an RBI as the Utes opened a four-game series in Moraga, Calif., with a victory.

"Mitch was outstanding on the mound today," Utah coach Bill Kinneberg said. "He had a good mix and in the later innings he had a tremendous slider."

Dallas Carroll had two RBIs and Braden Anderson scored twice for Utah (6-5).

Utah Valley 6, Nevada 5 • Stone Ramsey's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning propelled the Wolverines past the Wolfpack in Orem.

Ramsey was 2-for-3 with two runs, and Mark Krueger and Kai Hatch each went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Wolverines (7-7), who play Nevada again at noon Saturday.

Women's tennis

Utah 5, Arizona 2 • The Utes won the doubles point and five of six singles matches, with Callie Craig capping the victory with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles as the Utes (7-2, 1-0) earned their first Pac-12 victory of the season.

Oregon 5, BYU 2 • In Eugene, Ore., the Ducks won the doubles point and four of six singles matches, while the Cougars (5-3) won two singles matches by default due to Oregon's secured victory.

Utah State • The Aggies match at UNLV was postponed because of weather. The teams will play at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Indoor track and field

Utah • Senior Amanda Mergaert qualified for the finals in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.

Mergaert ran 4 minutes, 38.56 seconds to finish fourth in her heat and 10th overall. The mile final is at 5 p.m. Saturday.

BYU • Kelsey Brown failed to qualify for the finals in the 800 meters, running 2:18.55 to finish 15th out of 16. The top eight make finals.

On the men's side, Ryan Waite also failed to make the 800 finals, running 1:49.77 to finish 13th out of 16.

Jared Ward ran 13:54.04 to place ninth and teammate Tylor Thatcher ran 14:12.55 to finish 15th in the 5,000.

Victor Weirich cleared 17 feet, 81/2 inches to place 13th in the pole vault.

Women's gymnastics

BYU 195.875, Southern Utah 195.425 • In Cedar City, Megan Bain won the all-around with a score of 39.250, leading the Cougars to a season-high score and their second win over the Thunderbirds in the past month.

Makenzie Johnson won the vault with a score of 9.875 and Bain won the balance beam with a score of 9.9. Haylee Rollins tied SUU's Arlyn Amor for first on the bars with a score of 9.875.

SUU's Michaela Chernoch won the floor with a score of 9.875.

Men's volleyball

BYU 3, Cal Baptist 0 • Taylor Sander smashed 16 kills to lead the No. 1 Cougars to a 25-13, 25-21, 25-20 win at Smith Fieldhouse.

Russ Lavaja and Josue Rivera each had six kills for BYU (14-3, 13-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation).

Softball

Arkansas 3, Utah Valley 0 • Tiffany Mills allowed two runs and four hits while striking out six, but the Wolverines were held to one hit to fall to 5-7.

Weber State • The Wildcats' game against Virginia Tech was canceled.
