Middlebury, Vt. • Sloan Storey placed fifth in the 5K Classic on Thursday, helping the University of Utah ski team improve to third place after the first day of Nordic competition at the NCAA Championships.

The Utes vaulted from fifth to third place after earning 185 points in Thursday's 5K/10K Classical races. Reigning national champion Vermont has 389 points, followed by Colorado (368.5) and Utah (350).

The NCAA championships continues at 7 a.m. MT on Friday with slalom races in the final day of alpine competition. The 15K/20K freestyle races are at 8 a.m. Saturday in the final day of Nordic competition.

Baseball

BYU 6, UC Irvine 3 • Jaycob Brugman hit two doubles and Jacob Hannemann went 3-for-4 with two RBIs as the Cougars (8-6) scored four runs in the seventh inning to beat the No. 21-ranked Anteaters at Larry H. Miller Field in Provo.

Utah Valley 17, Nevada 6 • In Orem, Stone Ramsey had five RBIs, Court Zollinger was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and Kade Andrus was 3-for-4 with three RBIs for the Wolverines (6-7), who cranked out 20 hits and allowed six runs in the top of the first inning.

Women's basketball

Utah State 73, Texas State 56 • In San Marcos, Texas, Devyn Christensen scored a game-high 24 points in just 15 minutes, helping the Aggies move into a first-place tie with Seattle in the Western Athletic Conference with one game remaining.

Utah State (17-11, 14-3) has won 11 of their past 12 games.

Portland State 79, Weber State 73 (OT) • In Portland, Ore., Diseree Ramos missed a free throw with three seconds remaining in regulation, and the Wildcats (0-28, 0-19) missed their final four shots in overtime to extend their Big Sky Conference-record winless streak to 47 games.

Southern Utah 71, Northern Colorado 58 • In Cedar City, Kimie Hawkins scored 13 points and Tayler Anderson tallied 11 points and seven rebounds as the Thunderbirds (14-15, 8-11) beat the Bears (18-11. 15-5), who are second in the Big Sky Conference.

SUU moved a game ahead of Northern Arizona — which lost at home to conference-leader Montana on Thursday — for the final spot in the Big Sky Conference Tournament. Each team plays their last regular-season game Saturday.

Softball

BYU 6-3, Maine 4-2 • In Tampa, Fla., Marissa Bravo was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the Cougars' 6-4 victory in Game 1, and her RBI double in the top of the seventh helped BYU (9-13) win 3-2 in Game 2.
