Luis Gil will be heading to Turkey, but first he’s coming back to Utah.
The 19-year-old midfielder helped the U.S. team beat Canada in a CONCACAF U-20 Championship quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday by scoring his team’s first goal in a 4-2 victory. With the win, the U.S. team advances to the 2013 World Cup, which will be held later this year in Turkey.

Gil will return to Salt Lake City on Wednesday and will be available for RSL on Sunday in San Jose for the season opener. That’s good news for RSL, especially considering that L.A. Galaxy rising star Jose Villarreal reportedly will stay with the national team and miss the start of the Major League Soccer season.
In U-20 play, Gil showed why RSL execs think so highly of him: He scored on a penalty kick to beat Haiti, assisted on a goal in a win over Costa Rica and scored once more against Canada.
