State colleges: BYU baseball team beats No. 2 LSU in Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge, La. • Brennor Anderson hit a three-run homer during a five-run BYU sixth inning, helping the Cougars snap a four-game losing streak in a 9-4 win over No. 2-ranked LSU Saturday night in college baseball.

"Against all odds we came out with a great mindset and played a near-perfect game," said Cougars coach Mike Littlewood, whose team played before a crowd of 6,742 at Alex Box Stadium — the sixth largest attendance in BYU history.

Anderson also hit a two-run single in the eighth inning, finishing 2-for-3 with five RBIs, and Kelton Caldwell was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI for the Cougars (3-5), who lost to Southeastern Louisiana earlier Saturday.

On Thursday, LSU (5-1) beat BYU 6-5 on a bases-loaded, walk-off single.

Utah 7, UC Davis 3 • In Davis, Calif., TJ Bennett hit a two-run homer in the eighth; AJ Young and Cory Hunt each hit ninth-inning home runs; and Tanner Banks allowed two runs and six hits while striking out four in seven innings for his first career win for Utah (3-2).

Utah Valley 7, Portland 6 (10); Utah Valley 3, Portland 1 • Kade Andrus hit an RBI double in the 10th inning in Game 1, while Adam Gunn allowed five hits and one run while striking out four in six innings during Game 2 for the Wolverines (3-3).

Men’s volleyball

BYU 3, Stanford 2 • Ben Patch smashed a game-high 26 kills and Taylor Sander added 25 as the No. 2 Cougars rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat the No. 5 Cardinal 23-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 15-13 at Smith Fieldhouse in Provo. Ryan Boyce had 57 assists and Josue Rivera tallied 12 kills for BYU (11-3, 10-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation), which has won three straight matches.

Softball

Utah 7, Long Island Brooklyn 0; Utah 5, Nevada 2 • The Utes extended their winning streak to five games, beating LIU Brooklyn in Game 1 and Nevada in Game 2 during the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.

In Game 1, Kelsi Hoopiiaina had a triple and home run, and Naomi Amu allowed five hits and struck out two in 51⁄3 innings for the Utes.

In Game 2, Utah (7-6) was held to one hit in six innings before exploding in the seventh for five runs.

Northwestern 4, BYU 1; UC Santa Barbara 12, BYU 10 • The Cougars (5-10) lost for the fifth time in six games, falling twice Saturday at the Mary Nutter Classic.

Texas 13, Utah State 2 (5); Tulsa 3, Utah State 0 • The Aggies remain winless on the season, losing twice at the Texas Invitational in Austin.

In Game 1, Jolene Koons and Sarah Chow each had a hit and a run for Utah State, who lost in five innings to the No. 6-ranked Longhorns (14-1).

In Game 2, Mandy Harmon allowed one run and five hits while striking out three for the Aggies (0-14). Lacey Middlebrooks allowed just two hits while striking out 10 for Tulsa.

UC Riverside 4, Weber State 3 • Janel Cunningham went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, but the Wildcats (0-8) couldn’t maintain their early during the Amy S. Harrison Classic in Riverside, Calif.
