Baton Rouge, La. • No. 2 LSU scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat BYU 6-5 in college baseball Thursday.
Jaycob Brugman was 2 for 4 with a three-run homer in the third inning and an RBI double in the eighth, which gave BYU a 5-4 lead.

"I tweaked the lineup a bit, moving Brugman to the four-hole, where he did a great job," BYU coach Mike Littlewood said. "Give LSU credit, they stepped up when they needed to, but the way we were playing tonight we could have beaten anyone in the country."
Women’s basketball
BYU 79, Portland 64 • In Provo, Haley Steed scored a season-high 23 and Jennifer Hamson tied her career high of 23 points in a West Coast Conference game.
Steed was 4 for 4 from 3-point range and 6 for 6 from the field in the second half. She also had nine assists. The Cougars are 19-7 and 10-3 in conference play.
Carroll 52, Westminster 43 • In Helena, Mont., the Saints snapped the third-ranked Griffins’ 16-game winning streak and school-record 22-game Frontier Conference winning streak. The Griffins (24-3) failed to make a 3-pointer for the first time in 162 games, finishing 0 for 12.
Idaho State 68, Weber State 37 • In Pocatello, Idaho, the Wilcats tied a Big Sky Conference record with their 44th straight loss. Weber State is 0-25 and hasn’t won since December 2011.

Softball
LSU 10, BYU 6 • The Cougars scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4, but the No. 11 Tigers hit a grand slam in the top of the seventh during the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.
Megan Arnold hit a home run in the sixth inning, and four BYU players had two hits. LSU (11-1) hit three home runs, including the grand slam.
Oklahoma State 3, BYU 2 • Tori Almond allowed five hits while striking out five in six innings, but a late Cougars rally fell short during the Mary Nutter Classic.
Gordy Bravo had an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning for BYU (4-8).
Men’s golf
Kahuku, Hawaii • Zach Blair shot an even-par 72 to move into a three-way tie for third place, helping BYU overtake No. 5 New Mexico for second place after Day 2 of the John Burns Intercollegiate.
Cal’s Joel Stalter leads the tournament at 7 under, followed by teammate Max Horna at 5 under. Blair is at 2 under, teammate Justin Keiley (even par) is tied for sixth after shooting 1 over and freshman Joe Parkinson (plus 3) climbed from 38th to a tie for ninth after shooting a 1-under 71.
No. 1 Cal is at 10 under, followed by BYU (plus 6) and New Mexico (plus 11). Utah (plus 51) is in 15th place.
