Zac Blair shot a 2-under 70 to lead BYU to a third-place tie after Day 1 of the John Burns Intercollegiate on Wednesday in Kahuku, Hawaii.
The Cougars shot an opening-round 292 (plus 4) at Turtle Bay Resort to finish in a three-way tie with Colorado State and Arizona.

No. 1 California (minus 4) leads by eight strokes followed by No. 5 New Mexico (minus 1).
Blair had four birdies, including two in his final three holes, to finish the first round tied for fourth. Justin Keiley is tied for sixth place after carding a 1-under 71. In his first collegiate tournament, freshman Joe Parkinson shot a 4-over 76, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 12th.
Utah • Brandon Kida shot a 3-over 75 as Utah sits in 15th place after the first round of the John Burns Intercollegiate. Joe Webber shot 77, while Daniel Engle, Gentry Hicks and Jack Maerki each posted an 80.
Women’s tennis • Utah State won all three doubles matches by a score of 8-3 and prevailed in four of six singles matches to beat Weber State 5-2 in Logan. The Aggies are 2-2, and the Wildcats are 2-8.
