Barring a last-minute change of heart by BYU football coach Bronco Mendenhall and new offensive coordinator Robert Anae, the new quarterbacks coach at BYU will be Jason Beck. Jason Beck, not to be confused with John Beck, is a former BYU quarterback who transferred to BYU from a junior college (College of the Canyons) and started just one game at QB for the Cougars — a 38-0 win over Utah State. He was primarily John Beck's backup. A source with knowledge of the hiring process confirmed to me Friday morning that Jason Beck has been told he has the job to replace Brandon Doman, who served as both offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. That leaves the staff with just one opening — receivers coach. My source isn't sure what the hangup is, or why Beck's hiring hasn't been officially announced by BYU. Jason Beck was in Provo interviewing for the position a few weeks ago, just before Mendenhall announced that Garett Tujague had been hired as the offensive line coach to replace Mark Weber and Mark Atuaia had been hired as the running backs coach to replace Joe DuPaix. Jason Beck was a graduate assistant at BYU in 2007, then held the same position at LSU under offensive coordinator Gary Crowton in 2008. He was the passing game coordinator/QBs coach at Weber State from 2009-11 under coach Ron McBride. Before accepting the BYU job, he was offensive coordinator at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada.

UPDATE: Also Friday, word began leaking out that the Cougars have hired UTEP's Guy Holliday to be their new receivers coach. Holliday has been at UTEP since 2008, but was not retained when head coach Mike Price resigned following the 2012 season. Holliday also served as UTEP's recruiting coordinator.

Holliday was wide receivers coach at Cornell for the 2007 season, according to his bio on the UTEP website. He coached receivers at Mississippi State from 2003-06.
