A pair of Real Salt Lake newcomers scored early, but a familiar face helped spoil a chance at a preseason victory.
RSL forward Joao Plata, acquired in a trade from Toronto this offseason, slotted home a goal in the opening minute of Wednesday’s matchup with the New York Red Bulls in Tucson, Ariz. Two minutes later, midfielder Cole Grossman, acquired via the waiver draft, put RSL up 2-0.

But longtime RSL defender Jamison Olave, who along with Fabian Espindola was traded to New York in exchange for cash at the start of the offseason, made his old team pay. Olave got on the end of a corner kick and scored Red Bulls’ first goal in the 31st minute.
New York’s Michael Bustamante went on to score the equalizer.
Two players likely to be opening day starters for RSL, forwards Robbie Findley and Alvaro Saborio, both played their first preseason match of the year. The duo played together for roughly 30 scoreless minutes.
RSL next plays Seattle on Saturday, as the Desert Diamond Cup continues.
