NFL • Michael Vick took a significant pay cut to stay with the Philadelphia Eagles and compete for a starting job. The four-time Pro Bowl quarterback agreed Monday to a restructured three-year contract with the Eagles, just two seasons after signing a $100 million extension that included $35.5 million in guaranteed money. The new deal is essentially for one year, however. A source familiar with the contract said Vick could earn up to $10 million in 2013 if he meets all his performance incentives, and the team will void the remaining two years on March 15.

Vick was slated to earn about $16 million next season, including a $3 million roster bonus. He lost his starting job to rookie Nick Foles last season, but new coach Chip Kelly will give him a chance to win it back.

• New Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone began retooling his underperforming defense by releasing two veterans: linebacker Nick Barnett and strong safety George Wilson, the team's top two tacklers last season. The Bills are in transition once again after Marrone was hired last month to replace Chan Gailey, who was fired after three consecutive losing seasons. Marrone, the former Syracuse coach, has brought in an entirely new staff, including luring New York Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine to take over the same role in Buffalo.

Running back returns to Stanford

college football • Tyler Gaffney is leaving professional baseball to make a surprise return to the Stanford football team. After a year of playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates' Class-A affiliate, Stanford said that the former running back will rejoin the team after enrolling in classes again April 1. He will participate in the second half of spring practices and should help alleviate the loss of starting running back Stepfan Taylor. Gaffney ran for 449 yards and seven touchdowns and had 79 receiving yards with another TD as a backup to Taylor in his junior season. The Pirates drafted the two-sport star in the 24th round last year, and he hasn't played football since Stanford's overtime loss to Oklahoma State in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 2, 2012.

Yankees' Jeter runs on treadmill

BASEBALL • Shortstop Derek Jeter ran Monday for the first time since breaking his left ankle in October, and said he felt "great" after the workout on a treadmill at the New York Yankees' training complex in Tampa, Fla. It was another step toward being in the lineup on opening day.

• Outfielder Shin-Soo Choo and the Cincinnati Reds have agreed on a one-year contract for $7,375,000, avoiding arbitration. Choo made $4.9 million last season with Cleveland, which traded him to the Reds as part of a three-team deal in December.
