NFL • Coach Bill Parcells, Warren Sapp, Cris Carter, Jonathan Ogden and Larry Allen have been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The class of 2013 also includes a pair of senior selections, Curley Culp and Dave Robinson. The announcement was made Saturday in New Orleans, a day before the Super Bowl.
Five players were eliminated in the final vote: Jerome Bettis, Charles Haley, Andre Reed, Michael Strahan and Aeneas Williams.
Earlier Saturday, the selection committee eliminated Tim Brown, Kevin Greene, Will Shields and former owners Edward DeBartolo Jr. and Art Modell.
• Minnesota Vikings star Adrian Peterson's sensational season following major knee surgery has earned him The Associated Press 2012 NFL Most Valuable Player Award.
Peterson also won Offensive Player of the Year, and as sort of an added bonus, he beat the Broncos' Peyton Manning for both of them Saturday night.
Manning's own sensational recovery, from four neck surgeries, earned him Comeback Player honors.
Also honored were:
• Washington's Robert Griffin III, who beat out a strong crop of quarterbacks for the top offensive rookie award.
• Houston end J.J. Watt, who took Defensive Player of the Year, getting 49 of 50 votes.
• Bruce Arians, the first interim coach to win Coach of the Year, after leading Indianapolis to a 9-3 record while head man Chuck Pagano was being treated for leukemia. Arians became Arizona's head coach last month.
• Carolina linebacker Luke Kuechly, the league's leader in tackles with 164, who won the top defensive rookie award. Kuechly beat out Seattle linebacker Bobby Wagner, who graduated from Utah State last year.
