College football • Less than a month after undergoing open-heart surgery, former BYU football coach LaVell Edwards was in Houston on Thursday to receive the Paul "Bear" Bryant Lifetime Achievement Award.

The honor recognizes the career accomplishment of some of college football's finest coaches.

Past recipients of the award, which was initiated in 2000, include Iowa's Hayden Fry, Florida State's Bobby Bowden, Georgia's Vince Dooley and Nebraska's Tom Osborne.

Edwards was BYU's head coach for 29 years and ranks seventh on the all-time wins list, with a record of 257-101-3. He guided the Cougars to the national championship in 1984, 19 conference championships and 21 bowl games. He was twice honored as the national coach of the year.

Rangers, Harrison agree to $55M deal

MLB • The Texas Rangers have finalized a $55 million, five-year contract with All-Star left-hander Matt Harrison.

The deal announced Thursday includes a 2018 club option that could become guaranteed depending on the number of innings Harrison pitches.

• A person familiar with the negotiations says the Boston Red Sox and Mike Napoli have agreed to shorten their deal to a one-year contract worth $5 million.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement was not yet final.

Boston and Napoli agreed Dec. 3 during the winter meetings to a $39 million, three-year contract, subject to a successful physical. But the Red Sox became concerned about Napoli's hip, and that agreement was never announced.

The Red Sox also agreed to terms with catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia on a one-year, non-guaranteed contract.

Boston avoided salary arbitration with Saltalamacchia, 27, who hit .222 with 25 home runs and 59 RBIs last season.
