Travis Devashrayee's wide-open 15-foot jumper would have tied the game, but in retrospect, it's probably a good thing he missed.

Thirty seconds after missing an opportunity to knot up the score on the road in the middle of a furious fourth-quarter comeback, the Brighton senior drilled a 3-pointer with 23 seconds to give the Bengals all they'd need to defeat rival Alta 61-59 on the road Friday night.

"A lot of credit to him for having the confidence to jump back up and shoot the second one," Brighton coach Jeff Gardner said. "In a lot of ways, he's the backbone of our team. He's a kid that does so many things for us."

The 3-pointer was a cap to a momentous rally by the Bengals, who trailed the Hawks 55-44 with 3 minutes, 30 seconds left. Gardner said the team implemented its press and decided to play with as much energy as was left in the tank to get back into the mix.

It worked.

"It was less me telling them things," Gardner said, "and more them making big-time plays."

Brighton outscored Alta 17-4 in the final 3:30 of the game to escape with the victory. It was the Bengals' first Region 3 game of the season, and Gardner said it was the third time in a row a game between Brighton and Alta went down to the final possession.

"It was a big one for us," he said. "It's a great way to start the region and a great way to get some momentum."

Miles is on fire

It's worth the trip to see Morgan's Jake Miles, one of the state's most prolific scorers, play.

The Trojan star is averaging nearly 32 points per game over his last five outings and has helped his team get out to a hot 12-2 start and stay atop Region 11.

"He's a shooter," Morgan coach Jim Wiscombe said, "but Jake always puts the team first. He will find the open man if they're doubling him. He's pretty good that way."

Sweltering start

The Springville girls' basketball team is 11-0 and has no plans of slowing down. The Red Devils, one of four remaining undefeated girls' basketball teams in the state, along with Class 5A Bingham and Riverton as well as Class 4A Bonneville, is focused on winning games and finding ways to get better in practice.

"We don't really look at the fact that we are undefeated," said Red Devil coach Nancy Warner, "we focus on one day at a time and each day at a time. We have goals we're continually working on."

Springville forward Malia Nawahine, who had 22 points in Friday's 51-39 win over Orem, is averaging nearly 20 points per game and is a force on both ends of the floor.

"She is just a hard-nosed competitor," Warner said. "She hates to lose and plays with that attitude."

Book it

There are some basketball matchups worth salivating over this week, including Weber (12-1) at Davis (11-1) and Bountiful (10-3) at East (12-2) in boys' action Tuesday.

The matchup of the week, however, undoubtedly will be in girls' basketball, where Bingham plays at Riverton on Thursday. The Region 4 rivals both are 13-0.
