College football • Britt Maughan was named the new head football coach at Snow College, the school announced in a Thursday news release.

Maughan replaces Tyler Hughes, who stepped down on Monday to continue his education full time. Hughes will remain at Snow College through the spring semester, teaching classes and working with Maughan and the rest of the coaching staff to ensure a smooth transition.

Maughan has served the past two years as Snow's defensive coordinator. He was Snow's linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator from 2006 through 2008. He then spent two years as an assistant at the University of Utah.

MLB to expand blood testing

Baseball • Major League Baseball will test for human growth hormone throughout the regular season and will step up efforts to track the use of artificial testosterone.

Players were subject to blood testing for HGH during spring training last year, and Thursday's agreement between management and the players' association expands that. Those are in addition to urine tests for other performance-enhancing drugs.

"This is a proud and a great day for baseball," commissioner Bud Selig said following two days of owners' meetings. "We'll continue to be a leader in this field and do what we have to do."

Getting a jump on rivals Madrid and Istanbul, Tokyo officials outlined their candidacy three days after submitting their bid documents to the IOC.
