Scratch another name off BYU's list of 2013 football recruits. Darrin Laufasa, a running back and linebacker from Bothell, Wash., just told me that he will definitely not be signing with BYU next month. Laufasa committed to BYU last summer almost immediately after getting a scholarship offer from the Cougars. However, BYU has pulled that scholarship offer, Laufasa said, because BYU coaches do not believe he will be academically eligible to get into the school. It's complicated, Laufasa said, but basically he would need to get a score of 31 or better on the ACT college admission test (that's close to genius level, pretty much) in order to be accepted into BYU because his current GPA in core classes isn't high enough to bring that number down. He took the SAT and got what would be considered the equivalent of a 22 on the ACT. "They told me there was going to be a problem [with academics], so I officially de-committed," Laufasa said. He said he has offers from Idaho and UTEP and thinks he can qualify for either school. He is leaning toward UTEP because the Miners' new defensive coordinator is Jeff Choate, who coached his older brother at Washington State.Laufasa said he committed to BYU as a running back, but has since decided he would rather play linebacker in college. "God gave me a sign that I should be a linebacker," he said. "In a way, I look at it as a blessing [that he couldn't get in to BYU]." Laufasa said there are "definitely not any hard feelings" toward BYU. He said the recent offensive coaching shakeup — offensive coordinator Brandon Doman has been replaced by Robert Anae — had nothing to do with why he won't be attending BYU. "The BYU coaches have been great through all of this. It is just not going to work out," he said. "It just sucks that I can't be a part of that program." Laufasa played at Juanita High School as a freshman, sophomore and junior before transferring to Bothell High for his senior season. He ended up doing more blocking for a 2,000-yard rusher (Danny Wilson) than carrying the ball, but still had about 700 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Laufasa becomes the second offensive player to officially de-commit to BYU, joining Bingham receiver Hayden Weichers, who has committed to Utah State. Here's my updated list of BYU's 2013 commitmentsBYU FOOTBALL2013 COMMITSKeegan Hicks, 6-3, 280 OL from South Jordan, Utah (Bingham High School)Trajan Pili, 6-2, 200 LB from Las Vegas (Centennial High School)Dallin Leavitt, 5-11, 196 Safety from Portland, Ore.
