Sports briefs: Big East was 'unwilling' to keep Boise State

COLLEGE FOOTBALL • The Big East tried to work a deal to keep Boise State on board, but was "unwilling" to give the Broncos the deal that kept them in the Mountain West.

"We worked hard with Boise," Big East commissioner Mike Aresco told The Associated Press in a phone interview Tuesday. "We explored a lot of different ways to keep them. No question. Ultimately, we were unwilling to do the things they wanted."

Boise State had committed to play football in the Big East, starting in 2013. But the school announced Monday it was reversing course and staying in the Mountain West. San Diego State, another MWC team currently committed to play football in the Big East in 2013, also is reconsidering.

• Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett said Tuesday he plans to sue the NCAA in federal court over stiff sanctions imposed against Penn State University in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal. The Republican governor scheduled a Wednesday news conference to announce the antitrust filing. The sanctions, which were agreed to by the university in July, included a $60 million fine that would be used nationally to finance child-abuse prevention grants.

Randall wins race in Switzerland

WINTER SPORTS • Kikkan Randall of the United States and Finn Haagen Krogh of Norway won cross-country races Tuesday at the Tour de Ski in Val Mustair, Switzerland.

Randall finished more than 50 meters ahead of Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg of Norway.
