Skiing • American teenager Mikaela Shiffrin won her first World Cup event on Thursday in Are, Sweden, putting down a perfect second run to win a night slalom ahead of home favorite Frida Hansdotter.

The 17-year-old Shiffrin finished with a combined time of 1 minute, 45.36 seconds.

Overall World Cup leader Tina Maze of Slovenia was third, 0.52 behind.

Lindsey Vonn skipped the race, having taken a break from the World Cup to fully recover from an intestinal illness.

Phelps named AP male athlete of year

Swimming • Michael Phelps has added another triumph to his list of accomplishments: The Associated Press male athlete of the year.

The retired swimmer edged out LeBron James in voting announced Thursday, a fitting payoff for winning four golds and two silvers at the London Games, as well as recognition for becoming the most decorated Olympian ever.

Olympian admits to double life as escort

Olympics • Three-time Olympian runner Suzy Favor Hamilton has admitted leading a double life as an escort.

She apologized Thursday after a report by The Smoking Gun website said she had been working as a prostitute in Las Vegas.

Soon after the story appeared online, Hamilton released a series of tweets saying in part that she was "drawn to escorting in large part because it provided many coping mechanisms for me when I was going through a very challenging time with my marriage and my life."

Phillies sign Adams to $12M contract

MLB • The Phillies and reliever Mike Adams have finalized a $12 million, two-year contract.

Adams is expected to fill the eighth-inning role for the Phillies. He was 5-3 with a 3.27 ERA last season for the Texas Rangers.

• Third baseman Placido Polanco has agreed to a $2.75 million, one-year contract with the Miami Marlins.
