Sports briefs: SUU's Cam Levins wins Bowerman Award

Track and Field • Southern Utah University's Cameron Levins was named the winner of the 2012 Bowerman Award, given to the most outstanding track and field athlete of the year.

The award comes after Levins two individual titles in the men's 5K and 10K at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Levins also competed for Canada in the London Olympics.

Forbes ranks Texas most valuable

College football • Texas has the most valuable college football program in the nation, according to Forbes Magazine.

Forbes released its college football evaluations Wednesday. The magazine says the Longhorns are worth $133 million, up from $129 million last year.

Michigan ($120 million) was No. 2, followed by Notre Dame ($103 million). The rest of the top 10 consisted of SEC schools. Alabama ($95 million) was sixth.

• Two of the three men accused of assaulting Wisconsin running back Montee Ball this summer pleaded guilty to battery charges, but both were given a chance to avoid prison.

Wendell J. Venerable, 21, and Robert A. Wilks, 22, pleaded guilty to substantial battery, a felony that carries a maximum penalty of 18 months in prison. But instead of imposing a prison sentence, Dane County Judge Rebecca St. John placed them in a first-offenders program.

McIlroy wins U.S. golf writers award

Golf • Rory McIlroy is the near unanimous choice as the best male player by the Golf Writers Association of America.

McIlroy received 190 out of the 194 votes cast by GWAA members. Three votes went to FedEx Cup champion Brandt Snedeker, and the other went to Tiger Woods.

Angels trade Morales for Vargas

MLB • The Los Angeles Angels have traded power hitter Kendrys Morales to the Seattle Mariners for left-hander Jason Vargas.
