Lochte adds to his medal haul
swimming • Ryan Lochte won two more races at the short-course world championships on Sunday in Istanbul, finishing the event with six golds and one silver. The result matched his medal total from the last championships, in Dubai in 2010.
Lochte won the 100-meter individual medley, a day after he broke the world record in the event. The five-time Olympic champion finished in 51.21 seconds, ahead of Kenneth To of Australia and George Bovell III of Trinidad and Tobago.
Lochte then joined U.S. teammates Matthew Grevers, Kevin Cordes and Thomas Shields to win the 4x100-meter medley relay in 3:21.03, with Russia second and Australia third. Lochte's time of 45.22 seconds was the fastest on the team.
Davis Love III, son team up for title
golf • Davis Love III had a nice pitch shot on No. 18 and son Dru finished off the birdie to capture the Father-Son Challenge title Sunday in Orlando, Fla. The Loves teamed for an 11-under 61 in the final round at the Ritz-Carlton Grande Lakes, and finished at 23-under to edge Larry and Josh Nelson by one shot. Davis collects the entire $200,000 first prize, since Dru plays for Alabama's No.1-ranked golf team.
• Sergio Garcia won the rain-shortened Johor (Malaysia) Open, closing with an 11-under 61 for a three-stroke victory in the Asian Tour's season-ending event.
• Australasian Tour rookie Daniel Popovic completed an improbable wire-to-wire victory in the Australian PGA, shooting a 3-under 69 on Sunday for a four-stroke victory in Coolum, Australia.
Brazil's Corinthians win Club World Cup
soccer • Brazil's Corinthians ended Europe's five-year winning streak at the Club World Cup, beating Chelsea 1-0 in Yokohama, Japan, behind Paolo Guerrero's goal off a scramble in the 69th minute. Corinthians, which won the inaugural tournament in 2000, joined Barcelona as the only teams to win the title twice.
• Lionel Messi scored twice for his eighth straight start and extended his scoring record to 90 goals for the calendar year, leading host Barcelona over second-place Atletico Madrid 4-1 in the Spanish league.
