Sports briefs: AP names FCS All-America team

College football • Payton Award finalists Taylor Heinicke, the record-setting quarterback from Old Dominion, and Eric Breitenstein, the 2,000-yard rusher from Wofford, have been selected to The Associated Press FCS All-America team.

Heinicke had the most prolific passing season in the history of what used to be called Division I-AA football. The sophomore from Georgia passed for 5,076 yards and had 5,546 yards of total offense .

Breitenstein is making his second straight appearance as a first-team All-American. The senior ran for 2,035 yards and 19 touchdowns this season.

Lochte wins golds at short-course worlds

Swimming • Olympic star Ryan Lochte won two gold medals Wednesday as the United States dominated the first day of the short-course world championships.

The American posted a time of 1 minute, 41.92 seconds in the 200-meter freestyle event at the Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul. Paul Biedermann of Germany, the world record holder, finished second in 1:42.07, while Conor Dwyer of the United States was third in 1:43.78.

Chivas USA hires Sola as new coach

Soccer • Chivas USA hired Jose Luis Sanchez Sola of Mexico's Primera Division of Liga MX as its coach Wednesday.

Known as "El Chelis," Sanchez Sola says he wants to implement a more appealing style of play for the team's fans. He has six years of head coaching experience in Mexico's Primera Division. The 53-year-old coach never played professional soccer.
