Failing to qualify for bowl hurts Whittingham's earning potential
First Published Nov 26 2012 10:04 am • Last Updated Nov 26 2012 10:04 am

Failing to qualify for a bowl game this year hurts the Utes in a couple of ways. Going to a bowl gives teams added weeks of practice, which coach Kyle Whittingham has said essentially equates to having an extra spring session. With a young quarterback and young defense, losing that opportunity won't do the Utes any favors going into the 2013 season.

Going to a bowl game can also hurt recruiting because it's one more chance to show off the program, get some national attention and brag about bowl streaks.

Whittingham, who has called this his most frustrating season to date, will feel the pain of failing to qualify for a bowl game personally.

According to his contract, he receives pay equal to two months of his base salary of $440,000 if the Utes go bowling.
