Baseball • St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese is OK after crashing his SUV while trying to avoid a deer.

The accident happened Thursday afternoon in the St. Louis suburb of Wildwood.

The 29-year-old, who was the MVP of the 2011 World Series, crashed his black 2011 Range Rover into a tree, missing the deer.

Freese refused medical attention and his SUV was towed from the scene.

Investigators say alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

U.S. defender Bocanegra out for 6 weeks after injurying leg

soccer • Spanish club Racing Santander says U.S. defender Carlos Bocanegra will be sidelined for six weeks because of a muscle tear in his left leg.

Bocanegra was injured during the United States' 2-2 draw with Russia on Nov. 14.

Bocanegra is playing for Racing in Spain's second division on loan from Scottish side Rangers.

He shouldn't miss any time with the American national side, set to resume play against Honduras on Feb 6.
