Utes keeping tabs on JC quarterback
First Published Nov 21 2012 11:50 am • Last Updated Nov 21 2012 11:50 am

The Utah Utes already have two commitments from quarterbacks for their 2013 signing class, but that doesn't mean they've stopped looking for players to fill the position.

One quarterback who is still of interest to the Utes is Aaron Cantu, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound quarterback for East Los Angeles College.

The Utes have followed Cantu since he was in high school and have stayed in touch with Cantu, although they've yet to offer him said East Los Angeles College coach Steve Mojarro.

"They've kept an eye on him," Mojarro said. "Coach Johnson called last week and they know about our program."

The Utes recruited former receiver Shaky Smithson and current receiver Anthony Denham and lineman Carlos Lozano from the school.

Cantu has a 14-2 record as a starter and averaged 373.1 yards passing a game this year, Mojarro said. He was 271-for-435 for 3,358 yards and 32 touchdowns with eight interceptions.

TCU and UTEP are other schools that have shown interest in Cantu, who could provide experience at the backup role with Jon Hays graduating.

The Utes have commitments from Brandon Cox out of Pasadena, Calif., and Conner Manning out of Lake Forest, Calif.
