Nick Thompson scored 20 points to lead the Utah Valley University men's basketball team to a 96-70 win over Arizona Christian on Saturday in Orem in the Wolverines' home opener.
Utah Valley (2-2) used a 17-4 run to close the first half and seize control of the game. UVU led by as many as 30 points in the second half.
Ben Aird scored 17 points while Taylor Brown had a career-high 15, Alfonzo Hubbard had 14 and Keawe Enos added 10.
UVU shot 58.6 percent from the field for the game, with Aird going 7 for 10 and Thompson going 8 for 13.
"It's certainly good to get a home game win under our belt to start the year. I know the kids are happy to be home," said UVU coach Dick Hunsaker. "It was good to get off the road and get a little energy in our tank."
Enos started the half-ending run with a 3-pointer followed by a Holton Hunsaker jumper and two Aird free throws to extend the lead to 10. Brown's bucket with 1:10 to go in the half gave UVU a 47-31 lead at the break.
Westminster 68, College of Idaho 50 • In Caldwell, Idaho, Tallon Robertson scored 16 points, while Jake Orchard and Blake Skidmore added 12 each to lead the Griffins to the win.
Women's basketball
Loyola Marymount 98, Utah State 81 • In Los Angeles, the Aggies fell to 0-3 on the season despite getting a career-high 31 points from senior guard Devyn Christensen. Franny Vaaulu had 18 points for USU, and Jenna Johnson added 12.
Santa Clara 80, Utah Valley 67 • In Santa Clara, Calif., Kaycee Mansfield scored a game-high 23 points for the Wolverines in the loss.
Simon Fraser 74, Dixie State 52 • In St. George, Kaylah Miller led the Red Storm with 14 points in the loss.
