Utah State, picked for fourth place before the women's volleyball season began, doesn't need to worry about where it fits into the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. The Aggies were regular-season champions.
The Aggies (20-8, 15-3 WAC) won their first regular-season title since taking the Eastern Division of the Big West in 1999, when current coach Grayson DuBose was an assistant. USU opens the tournament Monday against 8th seed Seattle University in the day's final match at the Convocation Center in San Antonio.
The first of four matches begins at 11 a.m. The championship is scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday on ESPNU.
With one regular-season match to play, three teams — UT-San Antonio, New Mexico State and Idaho — are tied at 12-5 and fighting for seeds two through four. Denver, Texas State and San Jose State are 9-8 in WAC play and competing for the fifth through seventh seeds.
"Polls are fun, but you never know how they're going to shake out until you hit the court," DuBose said. "These girls have meant a lot to our program as far as setting a standard, setting an expectation level that is pretty high."
Utah State clinched the WAC title with a six-match winning streak late in the season. The Aggies won the season-long battle at the net where they lead the WAC in overall blocking.
Outside hitter Josselyn White and opposite Shay Sorensen provided just enough offense, allowing USU to finish fourth in overall attack percentage.
"It's been our goal and we knew we could do it," Sorensen said on USU's website. "It's something the team has wanted for so long."
