Provo • Tennessee State gave BYU a competitive game in the men's basketball season opener last Friday, and there's no reason to believe that Georgia State will be any less formidable, Cougars coach Dave Rose said Monday.

The Cougars and Panthers will meet for the first time ever Tuesday (7 p.m., BYUtv) at the Marriott Center, the second game of the Acura Coaches vs. Cancer Classic for BYU after it downed TSU 81-66 last week.

"They don't have as many returning players, but it is going to be the same system," Rose said of GSU. "It is going to be a really interesting game, because they change defenses more than any team we have ever played since we've been here."

Georgia State is in the Colonial Athletic Association, but will move to the Sun Belt Conference next year. The Panthers (0-1) gave No. 8 Duke a decent game last Friday before falling 74-55 at Cameron Indoor Arena.

"BYU is a very good team and the Marriott Center is one of the toughest places in the country to play," said GSU coach Ron Hunter. "I wanted to challenge my team early in the season and I think our first two games will definitely do that."

Georgia State went 22-12 last year, Hunter's first season at the helm, and made it to the Round of 16 of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament before falling to Mercer.

Junior Devonta White, a 5-10 guard, is the only returning starter. He led the Panthers with 19 points in the loss to Duke.

Georgia State's tallest starters are 6-7 forwards Manny Atkins and Denny Burguillos.

"I think our fans will watch this game tomorrow and they will see a different approach to how the game is played," Rose said. "We will need to keep our pace. What we do will have to be a priority for us, and not turn that thing over. They make a play on almost every pass."

The tournament resumes Friday at the new Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, where BYU will meet No. 25 Florida State in a semifinal game. —
