After the Lakers have gotten off to their worst start since 1993, Coach Mike Brown has been fired, according to a source close to the situation.

The Lakers haven't commented on the move, but Brown's departure comes on the heels of the team falling to an 1-4 record after a loss to the Jazz on Wednesday. The Lakers in recent days had expressed public support for Brown, including Kobe Bryant.

It's currently unclear who will replace Brown beginning for tonight's game against Golden State at Staples Center, though Bernie Bickserstaff was Brown's top assistant. Former Lakers Coach Del Harris was fired 12 games into the 1999 season.

Brown, whom the Lakers hired following Phil Jackson's retirement in 2011, guided the Lakers to a 41-25 regular-season record and to the Western Conference semifinals.

This season, the Lakers mightily struggled with Brown's offense that included elements of the Princeton system. Brown, whose specialty rested on defense, also remained inconsistent.

The team had trouble picking up Brown's Princeton-based offense and also lagged defensively.
