Draper • Juan Diego's Kalei Reyes-Kauhaahaa let the postgame chant serve as a reminder that while Friday night's victory was impressive, the job is only halfway to completion.

"We ain't stopping! We ain't stopping!"

The senior linebacker led a Soaring Eagle defense that spent the night stopping Hurricane's high-scoring offense as Juan Diego dominated the visitors in a 38-0 rout in their Class 3A state football quarterfinal.

"I never had doubt, I had confidence in what we did," Reyes-Kauhaahaa said. "I wasn't going to let them score. I told our defense, 'We aren't going to stop. We're going to work hard to not let anyone score.' "

Juan Diego forced two turnovers, made five fourth-down stops and had Tigers quarterback Adlai Elison on the run all evening. Hurricane (9-2) managed just 40 yards in the first half and was shut out for the first time in five years.

A potent running game was more than enough to lead the Soaring Eagle to their fifth consecutive state semifinal appearance. Quarterback Nick Markosian rushed for touchdowns of 24 and 94 yards, and Chase Williams amassed 202 yards and a touchdown.

"The defense played awesome," Markosian said. "It's just good to see us going hard every play, not worrying about what they're doing. Getting a goose egg against a team like Hurricane is an accomplishment."

Juan Diego (12-0), which shut out Grantsville in the first round and has allowed just 24 points over its past eight games, will meet Dixie (9-2), which topped previously unbeaten Stansbury, next Friday in the semifinals at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

The Soaring Eagle set the tone defensively from the start, stopping the Tigers on a fourth-and-1 play at the Juan Diego 28-yard line. They also stopped two fake punts, recovered a fumble and added an exclamation mark with Reyes-Kauhaahaa's interception in the end zone. The game was delayed 17 minutes early in the fourth quarter when three of the field's four light banks lost power.

Shortly after play resumed, Markosian raced up the left sideline for the 94-yard touchdown to turn the lights out on Hurricane's season for good. —
