Provo • The BYU Cougars didn't get much of a test in their first exhibition game of the 2012-13 basketball season last week, a 103-57 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State.
Their second exhibition game should be quite a bit more challenging, however, as the Cougars play host to the University of Findlay (Ohio) on Saturday night (7 p.m., BYUtv) at the Marriott Center.
An NCAA Division II program from Ohio, the Oilers gave Dayton a good game last Saturday before falling 77-58 and are ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division II Bulletin preseason poll. They finished 24-7 last year, 14-5 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and made it to the second round of the NCAA D-II Tournament.
"They are a really good team," BYU center Brandon Davies said Tuesday after viewing a small bit of film. "They are going to help us get better, and we are going to help them. That's what these [exhibition] games are all about."
Junior Greg Kahlig, a second-team all-conference performer last year, averaged 12.6 points per game and is Findlay's top returning scorer. Senior Jack Smith averaged 8.2 points per game last year.
BYU coach Dave Rose is still tinkering with his starting lineup — the Cougars open the season next week at home against Tennessee State — and has said that it will be different from the one that started against Southeastern Oklahoma State. That lineup had Davies, Josh Sharp, Craig Cusick, Matt Carlino and Tyler Haws. —
