Prep football: East faces possibility of more sanctions

The East football program could be facing more sanctions due to playing ineligible athletes.

The Region 6 board of managers will meet Tuesday morning to discuss ineligible players in their region, Woods Cross principal John Haning confirmed Saturday night. East football will be one of the programs in the discussion, and it will present information about one or more of its players.

The program already received sanctions from the region this past week after it was discovered that it had an ineligible player who was living in Highland boundaries. East coach Brandon Matich was suspended one game, the program was fined $200 and forced to give up one of its preseason games for next year.

If there are more players who are ineligible or if the region comes to a different determination on the player already found ineligible, East could face serious consequences. Recent cases involving players on the Snow Canyon baseball and Timpview football teams ended with those programs being forced to forfeit all the games the ineligible players competed in.

The previously reported ineligible player played a few downs in the Cyprus and Bountiful games.
