soccer • Landon Donovan will not play for the U.S. national team in a pair of upcoming World Cup qualifying matches because of an injured left knee. U.S. Soccer said Tuesday that Donovan — who has more goals, assists and starts than any player in program history — likely will not be replaced on what was a 24-man roster for the upcoming qualifiers, Friday on the road against Antigua and Barbuda, and in Kansas City on Oct. 16 against Guatemala. Donovan was injured while playing Saturday for the Los Angeles Galaxy. He was selected by U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann for these qualifiers anyway, but he had his knee examined Tuesday before returning to Los Angeles for further evaluation.
Woods glad to stay in 'conversation'
golf • Tiger Woods isn't quite ready to move aside for Rory McIlroy.
It may be four years and counting since winning his 14th and most recent major, but Woods said Tuesday in Belek, Turkey, that he's already taken on two generations in his 16-year pro career and is just happy to be competitive against younger rivals.
"Rory is 23 and he's going to be around for a very, very long time — he's just getting started in his career. I've been out here for 16 to 17 years and I am still part of that conversation, which is good," Woods said.
Woods' clubs didn't do much talking Tuesday at the eight-player World Golf Finals in Turkey, losing to 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel by one shot in the $5.2 million event at the Sultan course in Antalya. McIlroy fared even worse in the medal match-play format, going down by six srokes to Matt Kuchar. McIlroy and Woods — ranked No. 1 and No. 2 — play each other Wednesday in the last of their three group matches, although both could be eliminated by then.
Coach's son transfers to Florida
COLLEGE BASKETBALL • Florida coach Billy Donovan's oldest son, also named Billy, has transferred to Florida from Catholic University. The walk-on junior guard must sit out this season under NCAA rules and will be eligible to compete for the Gators next fall. Donovan averaged 4.0 points and 1.7 rebounds in two years at Catholic.
