State colleges: BYU women's volleyball team wins title in Kansas

The BYU women's volleyball team upset No. 14 Tennessee on Saturday in Wichita, Kan., to win the Shocker Volleyball Classic championship.

Jessica Jardine had 13 kills and 11 digs for BYU (6-0), while freshman Alexa Gray had 12 kills and five blocks as BYU won 17-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-17.

Earlier Saturday, the Cougars beat No. 24 Colorado State 21-25, 25-12, 25-21, 25-16 for their first win over a top-25 team since 2008.

Jennifer Hamson led the Cougars (5-0) with 20 kills, and Nicole Warner had 12. Heather Hannemann had 46 assists and Ciara Parker totaled 19 digs in the match.

The last time BYU defeated a ranked opponent was in 2008, when the team defeated No. 15 CSU.

Utah • In Davis, Calif., sophomore outside hitter Chelsey Schofield had 11 digs and 10 kills, but the Utes got swept in their finale at the UC Davis Aggie Invitational, falling to North Carolina 25-17, 25-19, 25-16.

Southern Utah • In Savannah, Ga., the Thunderbirds swept two matches on the final day of the Savannah State Tiger Invitational, defeating the host school 25-8, 25-9. 25-12, and beating UNC Asheville 25-20, 25-10, 25-13. SUU hit a school-record .471 again Savannah State, suffering only two attacking errors during the match.

Utah State • In San Diego, Candace Richins had 13 kills as the Aggies beat Sacred Heart 25-19, 26-28, 25-19, 25-21 at the San Diego State Aztec Challenge.

Women's soccer

Utah 1, Weber State 0 • In Ogden, Allie Wisner scored her first career goal in the 25th minute to give Utah (3-1-1) the win. Wisner scored after the Wildcats failed to clear a corner kick by Leslie Muirhead. A Weber State player headed the ball toward Wisner, who drilled a right-footed shot from just inside the box that skipped off the wet turf and under the diving effort of goalkeeper Ryann Waldman.

Goalkeeper Lindsey Luke made four saves to earn the shutout.

Westminster 3, Doane 1 • Rylei North tallied a hat trick, giving the host Griffins (3-1) their third straight game.

Men's soccer

Westminster 3, Doane 0 • Goalkeeper Damir Sabanovic recorded his second consecutive shutout as the Griffins (3-0) remained undefeated. Anthony Alcox, Ryan Smith and Wilson Larson each scored for Westminster, and Larson also had an assist.

Cross country

Amber Henry led the Weber State women's team to victory at the Aggie Invitational in Logan, while BYU won the men's competition.

Henry won the 5K women's race in 17 minutes, 14.43 seconds, and teammate Taylor Thornley finished second in 17:27.40. Utah Valley finished second as a team, and Utah State finished third.

Weber State's John Coyle won the men's four-mile race in 18:45.91, helping the Wildcats finish second as a team, and BYU's Steve Flint finished second in 18:49.02.

UVU finished third in the team standings.

Southern Utah • In Flagstaff, Ariz., Sylvia Bedford led the SUU women to victory at Northern Arizona's George Kyte Invitational, placing second in the 5K race with a time of 16 minutes, 59.3 seconds. National qualifier Nate Jewkes led the SUU men to a second-place finish, finishing second behind NAU's Brian Shrader with an 8K time of 25:23.2.
