The Colts and Bengals each missed five starters in Thursday night's preseason finale.

Indy played without receiver Austin Collie, cornerback Jerraud Powers, defensive end Cory Redding and left guard Joe Reitz. All are hurt. Dwight Freeney also sat out and was replaced in the lineup by Justin Hickman.

Donnie Avery replaced Collie.

NFL, Army pair up for concussion program

The NFL and U.S. Army have teamed on a long-term program to care for and prevent concussions and head trauma.

Commissioner Roger Goodell and General Raymond T. Odierno, the Army chief of staff, announced the initiative at the U.S. Military Academy on Thursday.

Goodell and Odierno cited the common traits between soldiers and football players, particularly when dealing with stressful situations that can lead to injury.

Also on Thursday, the NFL moved to try to shut down lawsuits filed by thousands of former players who say they suffered or fear suffering permanent brain injuries from football-related concussions, calling the issue a "labor dispute" that should be resolved not by courts but by terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Around the league

Titans • The NFL has suspended receiver Kenny Britt one game after a DUI arrest, his eighth run-in with police since he was drafted in 2009.

Bengals • Quarterback Andy Dalton does not appear to have a serious injury after leaving Thursday night's game with a bruised right arm.

Coach Marvin Lewis says Dalton was "fine" and would have returned had it been a regular season game.

Rams • St. Louis rookie defensive tackle Michael Brockers injured his right ankle near the end of the first quarter of the preseason finale.

Brockers, the team's first-round draft pick, was injured when he got tangled up with the Ravens' Jah Reid with 4 seconds to go in the quarter. —
